Tuesday 13th
April
The local
laundromat was in Flashy’s sights today as he seems to generate an awful lot of
laundry. Not that he is particularly dirty, just that he probably hasn’t quite
figured out how to be as economical with his attire as Lady Penelope. It was
one load, three pairs of knickers, one pair of jeans and two tops for Lady P
and the rest was Flashy’s – jeans, shirts, jocks, socks – it was never ending
but he happily sat in the laundromat with a very nice coffee made by the quiet
young lady next door – there are other adjectives to describe quiet but they
may not be appropriate.
Lady P
meanwhile worked on some travel arrangements, inserted images in the blog and
spoke to NZ amongst other things.
Wineries
beckoned as lunchtime approached, so we headed of to Robert Steins for a
tasting under the gum trees (with the boom box in the background). 20 mins in,
Lady P requested they turned down the music – we were in the middle of the vineyards
with parrots and other wildlife – we didn’t need music so loud that it was hard
to hear what the lovely British girl was even saying. Wines were OK but over
hyped and flashy only scored them 3/5. The lovely server had just passed her WSET
level 2 exams and was definitely knowledgeable but possibly let down by the ego
of the winemaker.
Lunch had
been booked at Lowe Winery and a complimentary sparkling rose opened the
tasting. It was delicious. The venue was superb, the tasting generous, the
hospitality above and beyond and there were happy families and wine tasters
everywhere – even on a Tuesday. Someone had given a lot of thought to the whole
vision of the winery which also included an onsite up market restaurant, a pop
up pavilion for functions, a bush chapel for weddings and another chook house
of much more meagre proportions than
others before on the trip but equally as attractive to the good looking hens.
A stroll
along the original chardonnay grape vine picked by hand by the owner annually,
followed the delicious tasting and generous cheese and pickle platter before we
headed back to the big smoke of Mudgee central for some more admin.
A walk
through the sculpture garden on the river bank followed and a visit to the Gin
Bar for some ‘different’ gin options and combinations, before short walk along
the road to Roth’s Wine Bar for dinner. The manager was ex Qantas staff, been
in town for seven months and the wines we sampled were delicious along with the
pulled pork pizza we shared. Home for a nightcap by the fire and the essential
game of Five Crowns to cap of the night.
